#Adulting

So I have recently discovered that adulting is hard. Some of you might be nodding and smirking at this very obvious discovery, but since this blog is to share my personal experiences, I thought I would share this one.

Moving to Korea at the end of 2018 was the first time I experienced living in an apartment and living on my own. When I attended university, I lived at home and commuted for the purpose of saving money. In the end, I was able to graduate without student loans, so I think the sacrifice of freedom was worth the reward.

But even though in Korea I had a full time job that included health insurance and a pension, a part of my contract also included a housing stipend. So I wasn’t required to pay for my apartment rent, only the utilities, which were dirt cheap compared to the states.

Fast forward to September of 2019. I moved back home with my mom and began my search for a job. It took just over a month to find a job, but I currently have 2 part time jobs, and for both combined I work 40 hours a week. But while for one job I have a 401k, I don’t have health insurance at either.

Some of you might be thinking that since I’m not 26, I can just be added to my mom’s insurance no problem, right? Well, it’s possible, and that’s what I did, until I realized that paying for health insurance cost almost as much as I made every month. Health insurance is ridiculously expensive! So I began the process of switching to an affordable plan, and 2 months later am still in the process.

Needless to say, I cannot afford to move into an apartment yet. And this becomes reason #73* of why I miss Korea. Adulting is much easier to manage because the cost of living is lower than in the states. But while there are many reasons I miss Korea, I am glad to be home with my friends and family even though #AdultingIsHard.

*Disclaimer: There are not actually 72 pervious reasons of why I miss Korea. 73 is simply arbitrary.
