Recording and Editing Audiobooks

Now that my program completely done (or will be once my final project is turned in next week), I will be posting about what I’ve done over the year.

As part of my master’s degree in publishing, one of our assignments was to record and edit the first three chapters of one of the publishing house’s books. Part of this process included reviewing audio sample submissions and choosing narrators. Our class was split into four groups, each with a different narrator. The course instructor would then use our edited audio files and choose the final narrator to complete the whole audiobook after.

We used Adobe Audition in the previous semester for our podcast assignment, so the second time around it felt a bit easier to navigate. Using professional microphones to record also made a big difference, in comparison to recording for our podcast. For the podcast, since we were doing an interview with busy authors, we had to record the conversation over Microsoft Teams, which meant that each person had a different audio quality. So when it came to the editing process for the audiobook, we were already starting on a good note.

I can say that I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I actually enjoy the audiobook side of the publishing industry. Although I will admit that by the time I finished editing, I had practically memorized the book. Even so, maybe I can use these skills in the future!

As always, thanks for reading! Stay safe and stay happy.
